The Amazon Kindle DX has now gone global. users can pre-order the DX from other countries. The Kindle DX can be pre-ordered for those international users that are wanting to take advantage of this electronic reader. The new reader works in over 100 countries and users will be able to download the full library of Kindle titles available from these countries. Wireless coverage is available in every continent except for Antarctica.

Wireless download will still be blindingly fast as in the US (You can download a book in less than 60 seconds).

The Kindle DX is the largest of the electronic book readers in the Kindle family. With a 9.7 inch display, you can see a lot of the page, and even more images as well. The price is still $489 and has all of the features of the original DX, including the auto-rotating screen and the 5 way controller.

Most Popular Amazon Kindle Accessories

It looks like as of today, the top 4 most wished for accessories for the Amazon Kindle are as follows:

This is kind of interesting because what this is saying to me is that the smaller model as way more popular than the larger model. That means that the extra $200+ that you pay for the larger model isn’t worth it enough for people to shell out the extra dough. They are comfortable enough reading ebooks from the smaller Kindle.

This could be a number of different reasons. One of them is that the smaller Kindle is preferred for mobility, and that is actually a plus. It could also be that the DX model is just outside of the price range of the target market for electronic reading devices. I wonder if the economy is also making the smaller model more popular. The $100 price drop from the original model certainly makes it much more reachable to the consumer market, and the Kindle is the #1 selling item on Amazon.

I heard that the Amazon Kindle was the most sold item at Amazon on Black Friday. This is interesting that there are still so many of them being sold. There was a big surge after the Kindle was on the Oprah show, and since then, there have been price drops and 2 additional models that have come out. The larger DX and then the Kindle 2. Originally priced at $359, an electronic reading enthusiast can now get one for $259.

With over 360,000 books, there is more than enough to be able to read before you run out of reading material. You can also listen to audio books as well. Why is this device so popular? Some people love it and others hate it. Make up your own mind!

In following the traditions of most technological gadgets, as time goes on, the price goes down. Amazon has come out with a new Kindle (the Amazon Kindle 3?), for those ebook reader aficionados.

The new Kindle is the same size as the Kindle 2 (6″ screen), yet it also has some new features. These features include:

3G Wireless: 3G wireless lets you download books right from your Kindle; no annual contracts, no monthly fees, and no hunting for Wi-Fi hotspots
Long Battery Life: Read for days without recharging
U.S. and International Coverage – Uses GSM technology—the most popular mobile wireless standard—with wireless coverage in over 100 countries.

All of the other great features of the previous Kindle 2 version are already there in this version. The size is the same as the Kindle 2 and it weighs about the same as well. The new thing is that more books have been added in Kindle format and you can now choose from over 360,000 to download to your device.

New Lower Price Kindle 2

Well, it looks like Amazon lowered the price of the Kindle even more. You can now get a Kindle 2 for only $259. That’s $100 less than what the original Kindle’s were going for.

This price reduction is only for the 6″ version. The 9″ version is still going for $489, that’s over $200 more than the 6″ model. If you ask me, I don’t know if the 9″ has more than $200 worth of features to be worth the price difference. The sales of the Kindle have definitely made an impact on the way ebooks are read, managed and created. Now that the iPhone has an app that will allow it to read Kindle ebooks, Amazon’s grip on the ebook market has further expanded. The Kindle app is the #1 ereader app.

Having said that, if you want a little more reading area to read your ebooks than the small iPhone screen, then you can get a Kindle reader for less than the high end iPHone model (they run $299).

Amazon Streamlining Kindle Ebook Selection

Amazon says they now have over 300,000 books, newspapers and blogs that can be downloaded into the Kindle, but will that number hold after they have streamlined their ebook selections?

You see, what has happened is that publishers have been publishing a number of public domain works, so when you look for certain works such as any of the public domain selections that are in Project Guttenberg, you will see that there are multiple copies of many of the titles.

Amazon decided to take it upon themselves to remedy the situation and remove all duplicate copies of public domain works. Only those who own the copyright will be able to publish the public domain works (at least that is what Amazon says…)

Advantages and Disadvantages of the Amazon Kindle DX

The Kindle DX features a number of advantages over the Kindle 2. Sporting four gigs of internal flash memory, the DX doubles the capacity of its predecessor, allowing for the storage of approximately 3000 non-illustrated titles. The screen is also larger, measuring in at ten inches as compared to the six inches of the previous Kindle’s. This larger screen makes textbooks easier to view, thus targeting a new demographic of college students not wishing to be burdened by numerous heavy physical volumes.

One of the DX’s new innovative features is its inclinometer, enabling it to be flipped sideways or upside-down while still retaining the correct text orientation. For years, critics of e-books have argued that separate reading devices are less convenient than physical books. While it may seem minor, the addition of the inclinometer showcases a level of customizability for the reading experience simply not available with non-electronic books. The inclinometer also improves the PDF viewing experience. By changing orientation, it is sometimes possible to zoom in on otherwise difficult-to-view PDFs that were designed to be viewed on computer screens.

The Kindle DX does have several disadvantages which, depending on perspective, might make its predecessor a more appropriate choice. Priced at $489, the Kindle DX significantly out prices both previous models, each of which retailed for $359 (now it retails at $299!). Also, while many find the larger size of the DX to be an asset, it finds itself competing with equally-sized netbooks which cost less while offering more features. While the newer display is larger and more ideal for many viewing conditions, there remains something to be said for a smaller gadget that is more easily portable.

Amazon Drops Prices on Kindle 2

Amazon has just dropped the price on the Kindle 2 by $60 to $299. The Kindle 2 is their 2nd generation 6″ electronic reading device that originally sold for $349. It has all the same great features and before, it is only that the price has dropped. It makes me wonder if they are planning on coming out with another version soon.

The price of their Kindle DX, the 9.7″ model still remains the same at $489, which makes the price gap between the 2 models even greater at almost $200.

Those of you who were waiting for a more reasonably priced device now have something that is more within your price range. With now over 300,000 titles to choose from, you shouldn’t have a shortage of things to read.

Shipping Amazon Kindle DX – It’s ON!

Amazon has started shipping the Kindle DX so if you ordered one and are waiting on it, you will be receiving it shortly. The Kindle DX is the 9.7 inch version of the Kindle. It comes with a bigger screen and more features for $130 more. One of the improved features is that the larger Kindle also holds more ebooks as well.

The new Amazon Kindle DX costs $489, so it’s not for the timid.

If you want to read more about the new features on the Kindle, see an earlier post which discusses some of these new features. The bigger screen is certainly exciting because the screen doesn’t feel as cramped. I feel it can also open up more diversity on how authors can display their content from their books as well.
